I am a speculative fiction and fantasy author. I live in
Minneapolis with my wife and 4 cats, hailing originally from the
northeast Twin Cities. I wrote my first book when I was 11, and it
was something I think an 11-year-old should be proud of. May it
never see the light of day.
After obtaining a journalism degree and working for half a decade
as a newspaper editor, I went back to school for a computer
science degree, and now I work as a full-stack software engineer.
Neither of those majors is what I treasure, though; it's the minor
in philosophy. It informs much more important things than work.
Writing fiction may have ridden somewhere in the backseat - maybe
under it - for high school and beyond, but I always wanted to
return to the craft. Journalism school sanded off some of my most
flowery writing instincts, but tackling writing Tide with a
vengeance is what it took to find my voice in full. The more I
write, the more the world and characters of Tide felt real. The
journey so far has been rewarding, on an existential level.
Outside of writing fiction, I love to cook, read, play and write
music for piano, and walk wherever there is wildlife. I spend a
lot of time with my beautiful, caring, intelligent wife, Kelsey.
We love to travel, for sightseeing, food, and photography (street
art in particular, some of which is featured on this website).
My mother is an artist and my father is a radio technician. Their
mix of creativity and pragmatism - each of them have both in
spades - shaped me into who I am today. We're inevitably products
of where we come from, and I bring as much of what I have
experienced into my writing as I can, even if the settings and
situations look nothing like my own life. True things are true
everywhere.
I'm overjoyed to have come this far, and I can't wait to see where
this road goes.
